Stephen Pattenden

Biography

Stephen Pattenden has been involved in ITC and Information to the home for around 20 years and having gained an MSC from Loughborough University in Robotics and Flexible Manufacturing Systems, spent 12 years with GEC Computers starting in IT and moving to Marketing and Business Development with GPT Payphones. He was involved with the BT MeterLink project and in the product management of the Telemetry Interface Unit developed by Payphones for BT. During this period he gained an MBA from the Open University and in-depth knowledge of the Metering and Utility Sectors.

He formed Telemetry Associates in 1998 and has been Principal Consultant and Managing Director since. The company was incorporated as Telemetry Associates Limited in April 2001.

Stephen manages the secretariat of The Application Home Initiative (TAHI), is the Managing Editor of the SmartHouse Code of Practice, is convenor of (Standards) TC205 WG5 (Residential Gateways) and is editor of the TAHI Open Architecture work. (He also designs and maintains this website).

Guy Hirson

Biography

Guy Hirson followed a BSc in Engineering and a Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering from South Africa with 8 years as an embedded systems designer, including running his own consultancy in South Africa designing custom embedded processor systems, both hardware and software. He was asked to join Irdeto (now Mindport) to develop the first DVB MPEG-2 broadcast systems deployed in the world and has worked in the digital TV broadcast industry for the last 8 years, including leading the development of the Broadcast Reference Model in DAVIC and working on projects within DVB and other international standards bodies. After 4 years with NDS, developing advanced product concepts and working on content security for home networks he spent a year with ntl developing new ideas for content protection mechanisms for broadband cable industries.

Guy became an Associate of Telemetry Associates in January 2002.

Wayne Caswell

An IBM trained systems engineer, management consultant, and home systems visionary with proven analytical and leadership abilities directed both internally and across industry. An innovative and multi-faceted change agent with over 20 years of experience in applying computer systems, software, marketing and strategy to solving business problems and building new markets. Broad-based competencies include:

Market and Competitive Analysis, Strategic Planning, Brand Management, Public Relations and Advertising, Market Development, Project management, Staff Development, User Training, and Written and Verbal Communications

Helped develop the Residential Gateway (RG) concept for an emerging market that could exceed $5 billion by 2005 and greatly influenced home systems business models, market development, product development, and industry standards (such as HomeRF, ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25/WG1, OSGi, and TIA TR-41.5).

Created Home Networking pavilions at COMDEX and CES and evangelized Home Networking through conference planning, keynote presentations, speaking engagements, published articles, and participation in industry forums (see attachment). Columnist and Wireless Data mentor for “HomeToys” magazine (www.hometoys.com/mentors/caswell).

Malcolm Stewart

Biography

Since graduating from University in 1986, Malcolm has pursued a career in sales, marketing and business development. Working in both large and small organisations, he has combined a results-oriented focus with a self-motivated, entrepreneurial spirit and drive.

A Thirteen-year career with Panasonic UK spanned sales, marketing, departmental management and business development responsibilities. Latterly, as Head of Multimedia Strategy for Panasonic in the UK, principal activities involved investigating and developing Service Provider business opportunities from within the end-to-end value chain that comprises Content – Service Provision – Network Distribution and Terminal Devices.

Key achievements within this role included various new sales opportunities including TV and Plasma screen sales for BAA Airport installations, and two Board level Collaboration Agreements with a major Telecoms operator, covering mobile communications and consumer products security related initiatives.

In June 2000 Malcolm set up Visionradio limited, and since May 2001 has worked independently on a number of business development and consultancy projects. Foremost amongst these are a marketing study for the European arm of a major mobile operator and taking an active lead in a UK Government sponsored project focused on next generation services to connected users in the home.

In parallel with the consultancy projects Malcolm has been driving forward development of new multimedia music video content and services, synonymous with the Visionradio name.

Malcolm became an Associate of Telemetry Associates in June 2003 and can bring all these attributes to Telemetry Associates' projects.

Biography
Tom spent the 1990s developing laptop and desktop PCs for NEC and Digital Equipment Corporation. During that time he was an active participant in efforts to address ease of use and power management. He had the honor of being one of the authors of Universal Serial Bus (USB) that created a common bus architecture for external device expandability

More recently his interest is in ubiquitous computing. Solving the network and security problems of unmanaged networks consisting of hundreds of nodes not just a few PCs. Networking has moved beyond the province of the IT department an into the home and small office.

Michael Patterson

Biography

Dr Mike Patterson is a chartered engineer with substantial experience of the energy sector, gained mostly in a technology development environment. After a post doctoral research fellowship at Surrey University, Mike spent more than 20 years in the management of Research and Development projects for British Gas and its successor companies.

Besides his technical development and operational experience, Mike was part of BG's international strategy development team, was responsible for the development of corporate technology strategy, and was closely involved with the evolution of Advantica Technologies Ltd from an internal services provider to a commercial business.

He has an in-depth knowledge of UK energy policy and regulation, with a particular interest in the Government's social and environmental agenda.

Mike became an associate of Telemetry Associates in April 2002, his first role being to help create and win a major collaborative industry/UK government development programme to demonstrate the interoperability and remote management of domestic equipment in the home. Mike has succesffully programme managed this consortium since October 2002, from its formative stages through to field trial evaluation of the innovative new gateway and backend system.

Peter Strong

Biography

Peter Strong is a highly innovative market led senior technologist, who has led the design of New Products that have achieved sales revenue in excess of $1bn in worldwide Consumer Electronic and Communications markets.

Over the past decade Peter has developed significant expertise in the Home Networking marketplace, in low cost, low power wireless communications both over air and over powerline and also in embedded system peripherals, sensors and micro-controllers in low cost, high performance Integrated Silicon and Systems on Chip for use in demanding consumer electronic and industrial applications.

Peter has provided invaluable, practical Board level advice and guidance on New Products and Emerging Technology for over 20 years. He has contributed and Chaired Standards Committees, Chaired several Boards for Venture Capitalists 3i, Advent and the WDA, featured in the NEDO report on Corporate Venturing and pioneered the first UK Sponsored Spinout with 3i.

Peter is thoroughly familiar with VC backed start up culture and with working closely with Main Boards, Senior Management and with internal Marketing and Business Development and Engineering teams to meet exacting Shareholder and Customer demands.

Stephen Western

Biography

Before taking a career change in late 2001 I had spent over 30 years working for Central and Local Government.

Since 1985, my main tasks have been to establish and run new Services such as West Yorkshire Grants and Wakefield MDC’s Community Care in the Independent Sector through the provision of Energy Advice to the establishment of an ESCO (Energy Services COmpany) to help eradicate fuel poverty in the North of England. My final post was to establish an Housing Trust its trading Company and become it’s first Chief Executive.

Having changed direction, I have worked in the Voluntary and Community Sector advising them on organisation and management as well as advising the Living Space Programme of TAHI on Public Authority organisation.

Over the last 10 years my extra-curricular activities have included being an Energy Adviser to the Association of Metropolitan Authorities, a member of the Utilities De-Regulation Working Group of the Northern Consortium of Housing Authorities, Lead Officer for Fuel Poverty on Wakefield Council’s Anti-Poverty Strategic Working Party and a member of the DTI’s Smart Metering Working Group.

Geoff Ward

Biography

Geoff Ward has had a varied career in Information Technology ranging through sales, marketing, resource management, programme management and consultancy.

After university, Geoff joined ICL working in the city initially in a technical role. This progressed to several successful years selling mainframe computer systems to insurance companies followed by a period with Dataskill, a software and services company, where he was responsible for services and project sales in mainland Europe.

On rejoining ICL, Geoff moved into marketing and became the Product Marketing Manager for the south of England before transferring to set up the marketing organisation of the newly formed retail division. He undertook a number of programme management activities involving new product launches, new market developments and organisational change management initiatives. Key achievements in this role included initiating the shift in the organisation from a product oriented to services lead including the establishment of a new consultancy business and a key role in the business strategy team of the international business. He was a member of the UK senior management team for a number of years ending his career in ICL in 2001 with responsibility for sales, marketing, consultancy, and project management.

On leaving ICL Geoff joined HomeRider Systems as a consultant and programme manager. He developed a process for the fulfilment of domestic diallers for a major UK Utility which included the formation of a 15 strong production line. His major achievement was to help conceive and win a major project, sponsored by UK Government, aimed to prove the technical and commercial viability of providing aggregated services over broadband to users in the home. Geoff was appointed the programme manager and was responsible for setting up a complex consortium agreement involving 17 organisations including corporates, HEIs and SMEs, establishing the working methods and practices to steer the programme to a successful conclusion, and regularly reporting to the Department of Trade & Industry.

Geoff left HomeRider in 2004 following the break with the French parent company, to establish himself as an independent consultant and project manager.

He has been associated with Telemetry Associates from 2002.
